🌟 Welcome to Year 4

Year 4 is an exciting year filled with opportunities to develop independence, confidence and a love of learning. Throughout the year, children will explore a wide range of topics across the curriculum.
Our learning is supported by a rich selection of books and practical experiences, alongside opportunities to develop creativity, teamwork and our school values.
General Information
PE days are Monday and Thursday. PE Kits should come to school in named PE bags and stay here until half-term. Swimming will take place over the Autumn Term on a Friday.
Homework - This is sent home Half-Termly. The homework consists of 9 different activities on a single grid format. The 5 Blue activities are expected to be complete, with a further 4 white optional activities. All tasks should be completed in the Homework book provided.
Year 4 'Favourite Reads Book' will come home with one child per week on a Thursday and should be brought back the following Tuesday to be shared with the class.
Times Tables Check:
As you know, all children in Year 4 are required to pass the MTC in the Summer Term. To help to prepare your child for this test, please encourage them to spend time at home on the TTRS site. It is such a useful website in building speed and confidence with times tables - especially those tricky ones, like 6s, 7s and 8s. Many children will achieved the 'Gone Green' status, meaning that they know all their times table facts and can recall them under 4 seconds.

🍂 Autumn Term
📚 English & Reading
We will begin the year with some fantastic texts, which will allow the children to develop their reading skills while exploring a range of genres and themes.
In English, we will write playscripts, poetry, setting descriptions, formal letters, diaries, instructions and speeches. Later in the term, children will explore explanation texts and develop their ability to write for different audiences and purposes.
🔢 Maths
Our mathematical learning will include place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, shape, symmetry, perimeter and measures. We will also work hard to develop our times-table knowledge, including the 3, 6, 9 and 7 times tables.
🔬 Science
We will investigate Animals including Humans, exploring the question “Where does all that food go?” We will then investigate sound and vibrations, discovering how sound is produced and how it travels.
🏛️ History & Geography
Our history learning begins with The UK and the Stuarts, with a particular focus on the Battle of Nantwich. We will also begin developing our geographical fieldwork skills.
🎨 Art, DT & Computing
Children will explore storytelling through drawing and learn about simple switches and circuits. In computing, we will learn about the Internet and audio production.
🏉 PE & Music
PE includes Tag Rugby, Swimming, Sportshall Athletics and Dance. In music, children will explore folk music and B-flat brass, with opportunities to begin developing their instrumental skills.
❄️ Spring Term
📚 English & Reading
Our spring reading includes The Firework Maker's Daughter, How Does a Lighthouse Work?, The Poet's Dog, Norse Myths and The Fossil Hunter.
Children will write sequel stories, explanations, recounts, diary entries, instructions, fantasy stories, poems, letters and fables. We will continue to develop vocabulary, sentence structure and writing for different audiences.
🔢 Maths
In maths, we will develop our understanding of multiplication and division, including the distributive law. We will investigate 2D and 3D shapes, symmetry, multiplication and division by 10 and 100, time, coordinates and fractions.
🔬 Science
We will investigate states of matter in our topic In a State, followed by electricity in Switched On. Children will explore how materials change state and investigate how electrical circuits work.
🏭 History & Geography
Our history focus moves to the Victorians and the Industrial Revolution. We will investigate how Britain changed during this important period and consider the impact of industrialisation.
✝️ RE
In RE, we will explore how beliefs shape lives, what Christians believe God is like and what kind of world we want to live in. We will also explore Good Friday and begin learning about diversity within Islam.
🏑 PE, Art, DT & Computing
PE includes Netball, Dance, Hockey and Gymnastics. Children will explore still life, levers and linkages, alongside computing topics including data logging and photo editing.
☀️ Summer Term
📚 English & Reading
The summer term brings some wonderful texts, including Poems from a Green and Blue Planet, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Two Weeks with the Queen and Jabberwocky.
Children will write historical narratives, biographies, reports, newspaper articles, posters, fantasy narratives, poems and eyewitness accounts. We will also have opportunities to perform poetry and explore writing in role.
🔢 Maths
Our maths learning will focus strongly on fractions and mixed numbers, including converting fractions and adding and subtracting mixed numbers. We will also develop our understanding of money and division with remainders.
🌍 History & Geography
One of our major summer topics will be World War Two, with a particular focus on evacuation. Children will explore what life was like for children during the war.
We will also develop our geographical understanding of hemispheres and the Tropics.
🌱 Science
Our science topic Who Am I? focuses on Living Things and their Habitats, giving children opportunities to investigate how living things are classified and where they live.
🎨 Art, DT & Computing
Children will explore sculpture and structure and design and consider a healthy and varied diet. Computing will include repetition in games, building on children's understanding of programming and digital skills.
🏏 PE & Music
Summer PE includes Cricket, Athletics, Rounders and Orienteering. Music will continue to provide opportunities for performance and exploration, including world percussion.
